Recognising this potential, the Comoros Geological Bureau (BGC), in collaboration with the Government of the Union of the Comoros and its technical and financial partners, has placed geothermal development among the country's strategic priorities in the energy sector.
Within this framework, the Karthala Geothermal Exploration Project aims to improve understanding of the geothermal system, assess the potential of the resource and establish the necessary conditions for its sustainable development.
This initiative benefits from the support and collaboration of several partners, including the African Development Bank (AfDB), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the African Union Commission (AUC), as well as other technical and financial partners committed to the development of renewable energy and geothermal resources in Africa.
The Comoros to Host ARGeo-C11
It is within this context that the Union of the Comoros will host the 11th African Rift Geothermal Conference (ARGeo-C11) from 19 to 24 October 2026 in Moroni.
Held at the Palais du Peuple, the conference will provide an important platform for geothermal and renewable energy stakeholders from across Africa and beyond.
ARGeo-C11 will bring together policymakers, government representatives, experts, researchers, academics, professionals, investors, financial institutions, technical and development partners, lecturers and students, as well as other stakeholders interested in geothermal development.
Over several days, participants will have the opportunity to share experiences, present their research and projects, exchange views on scientific and technological advances, and identify new opportunities for cooperation and investment in the geothermal sector.
